Abdominal Weight Gain

By: Dr. James D. Fontaine

Weight gain is a very common problem as we age, especially abdominal weight gain, which is the unhealthiest type. Of course, poor nutrition and lack of exercise contribute to weight gain, but even if you follow a healthy regimen, you may find it difficult to maintain an ideal weight due to hormone decline. If your hormones are low, you are fighting a losing battle with regards to weight gain. For example, most women gain abdominal weight after menopause due to a significant decline in the sex hormones estradiol and testosterone. Another common cause of weight gain is suboptimal thyroid hormone levels. In spite of this, most doctors do not do a thorough thyroid hormone evaluation and will tell you that your thyroid is normal even when it is not functioning optimally. Fortunately, Dr. Fontaine is an expert in managing thyroid hormone, as well as menopause and andropause symptoms. Our Healthy Aging Program includes a thorough assessment of hormones including estradiol, testosterone, progesterone, thyroid, DHEA. Optimizing these hormones in combination with proper nutrition (not a “diet”) will allow you to finally get your weight under control. If your overall weight is fairly good, but you have areas of stubborn fat, we can help you “spot reduce” with our body contouring devices including Coolsculpting, ultrasound and radiofrequency.
