What To Expect After Dermal Fillers
Dermal filler appointments are completed at our office quickly and with very few risks. Due to the numbing agents, the process does not typically cause significant discomfort and does not require downtime. You should expect swelling or bruising initially, but these symptoms should fade away quickly. Typical results can last from a few months to a year, depending on the type of filler used and the injection area. Touch-ups may be needed periodically to optimize results.
Who is a candidate for dermal fillers?
Candidates for dermal fillers may be looking to correct several signs of aging, including:
Wrinkles: As we age, we develop wrinkles due to various factors, including skin laxity from loss of collagen and elastin, loss of the underlying supporting tissue, including bone and fat, recurrent facial expressions, sun damage, smoking, and poor hydration. At Fontaine MD, we use fillers to restore lost volume and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
Thin lips: Your lips lose volume as you age, and we all naturally have different lip volumes and shapes. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be injected into your lips to obtain your desired shape or restore lost volume associated with aging. This treatment provides an instant, subtle plumping of the lip and also has a smoothing effect on the entire lip area.
Nasolabial folds (smile lines): Nasolabial folds are the folds that extend from the corners of your nose to the corners of your mouth. It is natural and beautiful to have soft nasolabial folds. However, deepening of the nasolabial folds due to facial volume loss is a sign of aging and is less appealing aesthetically. Restoration of beautiful, subtle nasolabial folds can be done by restoring volume loss in the cheeks, as well as injecting facial fillers into the area.
Marionette lines: Marionette lines extend downward from the corners of our mouth and are a sign of aging due to facial volume loss as well as a breakdown of collagen and elastin in your skin. Decreasing marionette lines can be accomplished with facial fillers. This includes injecting the cheek area if needed to decrease skin sagging as well as injecting in the region of the marionette lines themselves.
How is a dermal filler treatment performed?
Before your dermal filler injections, your injector will consult with you to gain insight into your desired results and determine which product will best deliver them. To begin the actual procedure, we will apply numbing cream as a local anesthetic to minimize the discomfort of the injections. What is JUVÉDERM?
JUVÉDERM is a line of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers that add volume or smoothness to the face in the areas that have lost some of their natural fullness from the loss of hyaluronic acid, which attracts water. The injected hyaluronic acid “plumps” the face back to a more youthful look. There are several different fillers in the product line, each with a different thickness allowing Dr. Fontaine to lift the tissue with some products and fill smaller lines with other products. Dr. Fontaine decides whether JUVÉDERM Ultra XC, JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC, JUVÉDERM VOLLURE, or JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA XC is ideal for you, depending on your symptoms and treatment goals.
What is Restylane?
Restylane is also a hyaluronic acid filler used to treat facial wrinkles and folds by adding volume below the skin and fullness to the skin. The hyaluronic acid attracts water and thus helps “plump” the skin reducing wrinkles and more youthful contour. There are several different fillers in the Restylane line, each with a different thickness allowing Dr. Fontaine to lift the tissue with some products and fill smaller lines with other products. Dr. Fontaine uses a particular Restylane product depending on your particular area of concern. These products include Restylane-L, Restylane Lyft with Lidocaine, Restylane Silk, Restylane Refyne, and Restylane Defyne.
Do dermal filler injections hurt?
Facial filler injections are performed with tiny needles, and the products contain numbing agents to minimize discomfort. In other words, any irritation tends to be mild. If you’re concerned about pain, you can request ice or a topical numbing cream.
When will I see results?
Hyaluronic acid injectable fillers such as JUVÉDERM and Restylane provide immediate results, meaning you’ll leave your appointment with smoother, more voluminous skin. There may be some initial swelling which varies depending on which product is used. While many people are pleased with the results right away, some people benefit from an enhancement to create their desired look. Your natural-looking results typically last for up to a year or longer. At that point, you can schedule additional JUVÉDERM treatment.
With Sculptra injections, the poly-L-lactic acid is suspended in water, which is absorbed within a few days, and your face returns to its prior volume. Then, over the next several weeks to months, collagen is restored, creating the desired volume restoration. *Individual results may vary.
How many injections will I need?
Your ideal number of injections depends on factors such as your treatment goals and the current state of your skin, and the number of muscles you have that are creating the wrinkles. Before your treatment, Dr. Fontaine discusses the specifics with you and recommends a treatment plan during your consultation. Each patient is treated individually and given the amount they need to achieve the best results. *Individual results may vary.
