Elbow Pain

By: Dr. James D. Fontaine

WHY DOES YOUR ELBOW HURT?

Elbow pain is commonly associated with gripping activities such as golf, tennis and weight lifting as well as repetitive motion activities such as using a keyboard and mouse. Common symptoms of an elbow problem include localized pain and tenderness on the inside or outside of the elbow, pain with gripping, pain with elbow motion. Although the source of pain may be the joint itself, elbow pain often arises from the soft tissue, especially where tendons attach to bone. The pain typically arises from inflammation of the affected area.

ELBOW PAIN TREATMENTS

Common treatment options for elbow pain such as physical therapy, bracing, medications and cortisone injections do not usually treat the underlying cause of the pain. Therapies treat the underlying source of inflammation and pain. If you are tired of persistent elbow pain or have pain that is interfering with your ability to do the activities you enjoy, then then our treatments may be right for you.

GOLFER’S ELBOW

Golfer’s elbow is also known as medial epicondylitis and occurs due to inflammation and degeneration of the common flexor tendon as it attaches to the bony prominence on the inside of your elbow. This problem typically arises from repetitive hand, wrist or forearm motions and can occur with golf, tennis, bowling, weight lifting and baseball (pitcher’s elbow). It can also occur with non-sporting activities that involve repetitive arm movements or gripping such as typing, painting, carpentry, and raking.

TENNIS ELBOW

Tennis elbow is also known lateral epicondylitis and occurs due to inflammation and degeneration of the common extensor tendon as it attaches to the bony prominence on the outside of your elbow. This problem typically arises from repetitive gripping activities such as those during tennis, racquetball, squash, fencing or weight lifting. It can also occur with non-sporting activities that involve repetitive arm movements or gripping such as typing, painting, carpentry, and knitting.
