Freckles
Dr. James D. Fontaine
Freckles are clusters of concentrated cells containing excess melanin (pigment) which are most visible on people with fair complexion but can occur on all skin types. Freckles are formed by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight. In most cases, freckles are harmless. However, if your freckles are a cosmetic concern, they can be significantly reduced with intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment, which also removes other brown spots such as age spots, liver spots and solar lentigines. Of course, if your skin is prone to freckles, it can be easily damaged by the sun and it is important to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF daily.
