Shoulder Pain
Dr. James D. Fontaine
WHY DOES YOUR SHOULDER HURT?
The shoulder is a very mobile joint with complex biomechanics. It is prone to injury with activities involving overhead motions such as throwing sports, the tennis serve and overhead lifting. Common symptoms of a shoulder problem include pain with raising your arm above shoulder level, reaching to put on your jacket, pain while sleeping on the affected side and pain with a throwing motion. The most common cause of shoulder pain is rotator cuff tendonitis. Other causes of shoulder pain include arthritis, rotator cuff tears, impingement, labral tears, bursitis and instability.
SHOULDER PAIN TREATMENTS
Common treatments options for shoulder pain such as physical therapy, medications and cortisone injections do not usually treat the underlying cause of the pain. Therapies treat the underlying source of inflammation and pain. If your shoulder pain is keeping you awake at night or affecting your ability to do the activities you enjoy, then our treatments may be right for you.
